Aeolus phone concept

Posted by arm On May - 31 - 2010

We’ve seen solar-powered handsets in the past before, but this time round we have a concept phone that would certainly be a hoot to check out if it were to be released. We’re talking about the Aeolus Phone concept by industrial designer Cyrene Quiamco, where it can be juiced not only via solar energy, but using wind power as well. The latter is made possible thanks to a power generating fan which can capture even the slightest breeze to produce energy. In order to maximize its juice, you get a simple, single color and an energy-efficient LCD display. Keeping in line with the overall green theme, it sports renewable materials as the construction material of choice. Imagine cycling around the neighborhood with the Aeolus phone docked on the bicycle’s handlebars in order to capture even more energy while you’re on the go, although the image above seems to suggest that bad breath works equally well.

In spite of reports in certain section of the media that Nokia is lacking in innovation, Nokia MD  feels otherwise. He things that Nokia is in quite a strong position to continue with the mobile market dominance. He said, “What you see in the India is a ferociously competitive market,’ he says. ‘People take shots at Nokia, but they wouldn’t bother if we weren’t leading the way. We’ve always had between a quarter and a third of total market share. It varies depending on which manufacturer is making inroads at the time. We’ve seen different providers come and go, but we’re still here. I think we have held the mindshare with our consumers. Don’t forget that smartphones are still a small segment of the market.” He claims that Nokia is in a strong position because they sell in different markets and low end in one market can be considered to be middle range in another market.

Countless of Sprint HTC Evo 4G expectants were left in a state of dilemma after a leak recommended that Qik Video chat quality on the cell phone might not be totally free.  Nevertheless it was not completely true, Qik today came out to clear the puzzlement and confirmed that basic Qik functionality counting Video Chat will be entirely free and user who wants premium features will have to pay money.

Qik has lived up to its name in expounding some leaks representing that future EVO 4G owners on Sprint will be charged $5 a month to make use of its video chat services. As it turns out, that subscription fee will be for a new range of “advanced premium features,” which will be elucidated on June 4 alongside the EVO’s retail launch.

“Firstly, rest assured that the core Qik service that lets you communicate live from your phone to other phones, web and desktop will be FREE. Yes – this means that the core capability of doing 2-way Qik video chat will be FREE for Sprint EVO 4G users. The subscription fee will be for some advanced premium features that we are working on, which we will be announcing on June 4th – the day the amazing HTC EVO 4G handset launches.”

The core two-way video calling will come absolutely free, we’re pledged, and only those yearning for extra features will have to pay up. It appears clear from the wording of that announcement that multi-party discussions will figure significantly in the premium set, however we’re left guessing at what other ways Qik has for seducing us to part with our cash.

Loop Concept Mobile Phone for the Blind

Posted by arm On May - 30 - 2010

This is the Loop, a concept mobile phone in development by Autodesk and LG, and made for the blind.

Apparently, you wear it on a clip to be put on your clothing, and get info on the OLED display that apparently works via Braille, somehow.

I’m not certain why the visually impaired would need something like this, except perhaps to dial a number. I know that the buttons on my mobile  phone don’t have Braille, but they have a standard order on the phone.

Ichiban: Sirius XM Android App now available

Posted by arm On May - 29 - 2010

Well well well! Sirius XM just released its Android App.  If you’re proverbial with the satellite radio company’s iPhone or BlackBerry Apps, then you’ll feel right at home with the Android one. You simply tell Sirius XM to send you an e-mail with the link to the App, you click alleged link, it downloads, then you launch. When you start it up you’re greeted with a login screen. Put in your username and password and off you go. Keep in mind that not all of Sirius XM’s channels are obtainable for mobile streaming because ofcontractual issues. But again, so long as 202 is there I’m happy. Candidly, that could be the only channel Sirius XM offers and I’d still be happy. Although it’s not on the list of supported handsets, that right there is the Motorola Devour. Your Droids and Nexus Ones and Droid Incredibles will work just fine with the App.

Nokia N8 Availability Confirmed on Vodafone UK

Posted by arm On May - 29 - 2010

Apparently, retail workers across the pond are far more knowledgeable when it comes to high-profile mobile devices, than they are here in the States. We only say that, because if we were to go into any store here and ask when, say, the Motorola Shadow was going to be released, we’d probably just get stared at. Maybe even asked to leave. But, maybe it’s Pocket-Lint’s good looks that got them to get the information they were looking for. They’ve just confirmed when the Nokia N8 is going to launch in the UK.

The new powerhouse from Nokia is set to launch in Germany on August 24, but obviously those in the UK were hoping that they might get it before that. Probably because that’s a long ways to wait. It doesn’t help that Vodafone has a registration page for the device on their site, either. Well, unfortunately for the Brits eagerly anticipating the device’s launch, it looks like they’ll have to wait another day after Germany gets their mitts on it. That’s right: looks like the Nokia N8 will be hitting the UK on August 25th, 2010.

If you’ll recall, that means on that fateful day, customers will be able to get their hands on 720p video playback, a 12MP camera, and Symbian^3 for your mobile Operating System (OS). But, if you need more reasons why you should think about getting the handset, check out our hands-on with the device, where we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised (even if you don’t get to see Nokia N8 powered on).
