Bicycle Chargers for Mobile Phones by Nokia

Posted by arm On June - 4 - 2010

Nokia has recently provided its Bicycle Charger kit which will allow the bicycle riders not to worry about charging their handset while enjoying bicycle riding. This Nokia Bicycle Charger Kit will not only allow you to charge your handset on the ride but it will also it also create an opportunity of small business for those people who could offer the mobile phone charging services for a fee using a bicycle. For the ones in the non emerging markets this latest solution will help to introduce the green way in order to keep your phones charged without plugging it in the electrical grid.

The Nokia Bicycle Charger Kit comes with a holder, a charger and a small electrical generator which helps in utilizing the movement of the wheel of the bicycle in order to charge the handset with the help of 2mm charging jack which is used on most of the Nokia handsets. These kits will be made available by the end of this year.

Nokia C1-01 and C1-02

Posted by arm On June - 4 - 2010

A pair of low cost handsets, the Nokia C1-01 and C1-02 are very similar in specification except that one has a camera and one does not.

Before we look at these cell phones in more detail, we have to say that we think that the model names indicate the mess that Nokia have made with their new naming conventions. The C1-01 is the one with the camera, the C1-02 is the one without.. although you would expect it to be the other way round from the 01 and 02 suffix. Even more confusingly, neither phone is really related to the double SIM Nokia C1-00 which is a completely different device. It seems to us that Nokia have painted themselves into a corner with these model names.

Apart from the camera, both these C1 models have a 1.8″ 128 x 160 pixel display, a microSD slot, Bluetooth, a music player, FM radio, GPRS and a stereo wired headset in the box. Talktime of these Nokia phones is quoted as over 10 hours with a maximum 21 days standby time.

There are two dual-band versions available, depending on region. Both devices are a very similar size, coming in at around 108 x 45 x 14mm and roughly 78 grams each (although actually the camera on the C1-01 adds 0.2mm and 1.3 grams but it’s hardly a big difference).

The C1-01 should be available in two shades of grey, red and midnight blue, the C1-02 in black, dark plum, blue and cool grey.. although colours will vary by region and carrier.

These are two nice looking devices, although the model names are likely to cause some confusion when they come to market. They should be available during the final quarter of 2010.

Nokia Launches C1-00 and C2-00 Dual SIM Phones

Posted by arm On June - 4 - 2010

Nokia has just produced its first dual SIM handsets in Kenya, the C1-00 and C2-00 models.C1-00 is pictured below and comes with an impressive battery, able to work in standby mode for up to 6 weeks in a row. Nokia C1-00 also incorporates a flashlight, FM radio, a 3.5mm audio jack, GSM 900/1800 MHz connectivity, the Series 30 interface and 128 x 160 pixel TFT display. The phone also integrates a handsfree speaker and supports MP3 ringtones.

One of a trio of low-end “C1″ cell phones  from Nokia, the Nokia C1-00 is distinctly different from the other two in that this is a double-SIM handset aimed primarily at emerging markets. By “double SIM” we mean that the C1-00 has two internal SIM slots, but only one is active at any one time and the user can swap between them by using a menu. This is different from “dual SIM” where there are two active SIM cards at any one time, such as the arrangement found in the Nokia C2. Apart from the SIM arrangement, the C1-00 is basically identical to the Nokia 1616 announced last year, with a 1.8″ 128 x 160 pixel display, built-in flashlight, FM radio and a modernised Series 30 interface. It’s worth noting that there is no data connectivity on the C1-00, so this is a device very much designed for making phone calls and sending SMS messages only. The standby time on the C1-00 is 48 days, which is almost 7 weeks. Talktime is a very good 13 hours, and the whole thing weighs just 73 grams and measures 107 x 45 x 15 mm. The C1-00 can be used with Nokia’s optional bicycle charger too, so there might be no need to ever plug it in. The C1-00 is a nice looking phone. It should be available during Q3 2010 in red, grey, blue and green colour schemes, although availability will probably be restricted to “emerging markets” only with the alternative C1-01 and C1-02 phones available elsewhere.

As far as Nokia C2-00 is concerned, this is a more expensive cell phone, because it’s got better specs.

This unit will debut in Q4 2010 and it’ll come packing GSM 900/1800 MHz connectivity, GPRS class 12, the Series 40 interface, a 128 x 160 pixel TFT display, an MP3 player and a microSD card slot (32GB support). A VGA camera, FM radio, Bluetooth and a 3.5mm audio jack complete the features list of Nokia C2-00.

Nokia’s first full dual-SIM phone, the Nokia C2 is a basic entry-level device aimed primarily at emerging markets, but with a feature set that should give it a pretty broad appeal worldwide. The Nokia C2 comes with Bluetooth, a microSD slot, a multimedia player, FM radio, VGA resolution camera, a 3.5mm audio connector, and in addition the standard sales package includes a Nokia WH-102 stereo wired headset. The display is a basic 1.8″ 128 x 160 pixel panel, and network support is limited to dual-band GSM with GPRS data only, and the operating system is Series 40 rather than anything fancy. But then the Nokia C2 does offer pretty remarkable value for money, and you can’t have everything, certainly not for €45 anyway. The clever part with the C2 is the dual-SIM capability. Both SIMs are active at the same time, so it really is like having two phones at once as either SIM can receive calls and the user can decide which SIM to use when dialling out. Perhaps the cleverest thing with the dual-SIM arrangement is that the second SIM is hot-swappable through a slot in the C2, so it can be inserted when the phone is on. We don’t know of any other phone that can do this, and if you are regularly swapping SIMs then it’s clearly an advantage. The C2 also comes with the usual Series 40 applications for personal information management, plus an email client and web browser. The multimedia player can cope with MP3, WMA and AAC formats, which when combined with the memory slot and 3.5mm audio socket will make it a useful music player. Nokia estimates that the C2 has up to 4 hours talktime and 16.5 days standby time, whether this is in dual-SIM or single-SIM configuration is not very clear. The handset weighs just 74 grams and measures 108 x 45 x 15mm. It is also a nice looking phone, available in gray, black, magenta, blue and white colour schemes. It certainly looks more expensive than it is. Nokia say that the C2 should be available during Q4 2010, and we assume that the C2 will be aimed at south Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe with specialist importers carrying it elsewhere.

Motorola FLIPOUT

Posted by arm On June - 3 - 2010

The Motorola FLIPOUT is an Android phone with a very unusual form factor, following on from the similarly named BACKFLIP and based on the same platform as the Motorola DEXT.

The rounded-off square design hides a five row QWERTY keyboard that rotates out from underneath, giving a fairly narrow set of keys with the slightly unusual feature of a row of number keys. Although the form factor is unusual, it is actually pretty similar to the US-only Nokia 7705 Twist, however the FLIPOUT is a much more powerful device than the Nokia.

On the front of the Motorola FLIPOUT is a 2.8″ touchscreen display in a traditional 320 x 240 pixel resolution. On the back is a fairly basic 3 megapixel fixed-focus camera which should be good enough for basic snapshots and occasional video clips, and Motorola have partnered with Kodak to integrate their technology for clearer pictures and easier sharing.

This is a 3.5G mobile phone with a maximum download speed of 7.2 Mbps and upload speed of up to 2 Mbps. The Motorola FLIPOUT also supports WiFi as you might expect. There’s a microSD card slot (with a 2GB card in the standard sales package), a 3.5mm audio connector, Bluetooth and USB connectivity plus an FM radio. The FLIPOUT also comes with GPS and has a digital compass.

This is an Android 2.1 smartphone supporting Motorola’s MOTOBLUR service which manages personal information and social networking. The FLIPOUT comes with all the usual Android features too, such as a wide range of Google applications, a capable web browser, email client and multimedia player, and of course you can download from a wide choice of applications on the Android Market.

Inside is a 1170 mAh battery which Motorola say can power the FLIPOUT for about 4.5 hours talktime on 3G and over 15 days standby time. The FLIPOUT measures 67 x 67 x 17mm and weighs 120 grams, so it is a bit of an unusual shape to fit into a pocket when you consider that the DEXT has a more conventional 114 x 58mm footprint.

There are quite a large variety of colours available which Motorola list as Saffron, Black Licorice, Poppy Red, Fairway Green, Rebel Pink, Raspberry Crush, Dark Sapphire, and Brilliant Blue.. although not all carriers will have all colours available.

Motorola say that the FLIPOUT should be available starting in Q2 2010, which in practice means from June onwards. There’s no word on pricing.

AT&T abolishes the Unlimited Data Plan

Posted by arm On June - 2 - 2010

AT&T declared Wednesday that it will start offering metered data plans for mobile device users sooner than all-you-can-use monthly plan. For people who use not more than 200 megabytes of data a month, the price of the novel plan is successfully cut in half.

The hottest proclamation could signal the beginning of a new arms race between mobile gadget carriers. In the past, carriers tried to woo buyers by offering mobile packages that were gauged by the number of voice minutes available each month. But as my colleague Jenna Wortham wrote in last month, people are talking on handsets less as data usages continues to rise.

AT&T also publicized a new service that will let smartphone, owners join their apparatus, including the iPhone, to a computer and use the phone to access the Internet as a modem. Apple iPhone customers have long requested that service.

The lowest-priced data option is called DataPlus and will cost $15 a month. It gives mobile handset subscribers access to 200 megabytes of data each month enough to send and receive 1,000 e-mails without attachments and an additional 150 with attachments. The plan would also tender access to 400 Web pages, the ability to post 50 photos to social Web sites and watch up to 20 minutes of streaming video through the mobile phone.

AT&T alleged in a press release that 65 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 200 MB of data per month on average. If DataPlus users go over the allotted 200 megabytes in a single month they will have the option to purchase an additional 200 megabytes for another $15.

LG Optimus Z mobile phone

Posted by arm On June - 2 - 2010

The LG Optimus was first presented at CES 2010 a couple of months ago, but more recently LG decided to come up with a new version named LG Optimus Z. The only difference between the two handsets is the version of the operative system, while the Optimus Z runs the Android 2.1, the Optimus Q makes use of Android 1.6. All the other specifications remain the same, which means it has a 3.5-inch touchscreen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor at 1GHz, and support for HD videos. At the moment there isn’t any information about this smartphone‘s price but as always we will keep you updated with the news.

Samsung B7722/B7702 Dual-Sim mobile phone

Posted by arm On June - 2 - 2010

Samsung has quite many dual SIM phones, but none of them feature 3G connectivity. Well, this is about to change soon with the introduction of the Samsung B7722 / B7702, a new touchscreen phone that should be available in Asia, Europe and Africa.

Apparently, the B7722 / B7702 will feature EDGE and HSDPA connectivity, a 3.2 inch display with 240 x 432 pixels (an unusual resolution, also seen at Sprint’s Samsung Instinct), Wi-Fi, social networking services, FM radio, and a 5MP camera.

The Samsung B7702 has been spotted in China, while Samsung B7722 is likely headed to Europe, since it’s mentioned by several European online retailers. The two model numbers designate the same handset, though, as suggested by the Bluetooth SIG here and here.

This Samsung touchscreen phone will cost close to $400 in Europe and should become available in June 2010.

Huawei G7002 for O2 in the UK

Posted by arm On June - 1 - 2010

There’s something to be said about a mobile phone manufacturer that, up until now, probably wasn’t very well known for being the handset manufacturer behind some popular handsets. For example, the T-Mobile Pulse, which is an Android device currently available for carriers like T-Mobile Hungary, is manufactured by the company. But all that’s about to change, as the OEM is getting ready to launch their very own branded hardware. Unfortunately, it’s missing quite a few features that might make it noticeable to some folks out there.

For example, there’s no word on what the software is quite yet. It’s a basic phone, though, even if it does feature a touchscreen. It’s also got a 1.3MP camera on the back, and an integrated FM radio for your listening pleasure. As for the G7002’s stand-out feature? That’d be its battery life, as the tech-specs page proclaims that the battery will last you upwards of 12 and a half days on stand-by.

The G7002 will be making its way to O2 UK coming up very soon. We don’t know if this is a “good enough” phone for someone looking for their next handset, but it is a pretty remarkable moment for Huawei, as they step into the future with their first-ever self-branded device. Good on them.

LG Town GT350 Announced, Hitting Europe This Month

Posted by arm On June - 1 - 2010

Announced in February as the successor of the LG KS360, the LG GT350 is now shipping to European markets (including the UK and Germany) with a new name: LG Town.

The launch of LG Town GT350 represents the debut of LG’s new Town Series, which will include  mobile devices focused on social networking services. The Town GT350 slider phone itself comes with a special user interface (apparently based on the S-Class UI) “designed to make it easier than ever to enjoy real-time interaction with friends on popular social networks” like Facebook, Twitter or Orkut. The cell phone  also features a 3 inch WQVGA (240 x 400) touchscreen display, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi (to compensate for the lack of 3G), Bluetooth 2.1, FM radio, 2MP camera, and MicroSD card support.
