Knife thugs will be aimed in a ground-breaking police operation tonight warning them they face jail if trapped carrying a weapon.
Bluetooth mobile device technology will be used by Strathclyde Police for the first time as an enforcement tool to curb knife crime.
Revelers celebrating the start of the holiday weekend will be targeted by police who will be in Glasgow city centre and the South Side.
Even though police issued safety messages using Bluetooth last Christmas, it’s the first time it has been used to lug a hard-hitting message. The Bluetooth messages will be sent to mobile handsets from late this afternoon and all through the night in targeted areas for instance clusters of pubs, clubs and youth discos.
It will read: “If you are caught carrying a knife, you WILL be arrested.”
Superintendent Derek Robertson, of Community Safety, assumed: “The Bluetooth message is clear – violence or carrying a knife will not be tolerated.”
Police want to reach individuals who may intend carrying a knife or violent behaviour and also, over and above reassuring the public that officers are in the local area ensuring their safety.
The Bluetooth sender will be carried in a marked car and will repeatedly send out the message. Everyone within approximately 100m of the device will receive a text message from Strathclyde Police, if they acknowledge the message they will see it reads: If you are caught carrying a knife, you WILL be arrested. Strathclyde Police is in your area NOW, making communities safer.
Superintendent Robertson added: “The aim of using this technology is to ensure that everyone who will be in the targeted areas tonight are not only safe but also feel safe.”
