Google Nexus or Samsung Galaxy S?

Posted by arm On October - 31 - 2010

Google and Samsung have joined forces to build a new  smartphone known as the Samsung Galaxy S2 , Nexus S and Nexus Two running Android OS.

The buzzes are focusing on four things: that the device will have Android 2.3 on board, or possibly even 3.0; it will be unveiled at Samsung’s November 8 event; it will be released through the Carphone Warehouse in the UK; and the smartphone will be here in time for Christmas.

Rumors that the new mobile device may be called the Samsung or Google Nexus Two have come as a surprise since Google previously announced it would not be releasing any more Nexus mobile phones, apart from the odd developer device.

Nevertheless Gizmodo says a source has reportedly seen the Nexus Two, or Nexus S, with claims it’s similar to the current Galaxy S but with some expected improvements.

These rumours claimed the Samsung Galaxy S2 would have a 2GHz processor and Android 3.0. Since neither the hardware nor software is likely to ready for release to the public in the next few months, it seems this isn’t the S2 or it’s an early version of the phone rushed out to try and keep ahead of the competition.

Possible contradictions to the latest news come in the form of previous statements from Google and manufacturers that Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) will not be on cell phones in mobile market  until early 2011 and that Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) is likely to land later and on tablets.

The fact that Google had said it will not make any more smartphones indicate that the name will be the Samsung Galaxy S2 or the Samsung Galaxy S with Google like the LG Optimus One with Google. And like the latter it may be the operating system will be designed solely by Google.

Is Google’s Nexus Two coming from Samsung on Nov. 8

Posted by arm On October - 29 - 2010

Google and Samsung may be preparing to announce the Nexus Two Android handset at a press conference in New York on November 8.

Last week, Samsung sent out invitations to the event for an inauguration of “a new Android phone”. Given that the business just recently rolled out its high-quality Galaxy S line of Android mobile phones, the ingenious device must be something unique to warrant a media event of its own.

Various sources tell the site that Samsung’s new gadjet will be the first device to ship with the just-completed Android 2.3 version, which also goes by the codename “Gingerbread”, and it will soon be availableon multiple carriers.

Google’s January release of the Nexus One, which was provided by HTC and dubbed a “superphone” because of its high-generation hardware, gave Android providers a template to follow for the rest of the year. Given that Samsung just released some of the most polished Android hardware on the market, it makes sense that Google would want to influence that to carry on the Nexus phone line.

Apple iPhone password hole on fix list

Posted by arm On October - 27 - 2010

In a week that featured scores of news on security from apps that penetrate it to Web sites that ignore it, Apple has accredited an error that makes it possible to gain easy access to iPhones, with a fix on the way.

This fastidious flaw, however, is serious enough that it should not get swept under the rug or lost in the shuffle. In fact, the flaw allows enormously anyone to gain access to the phone function without the need to enter a passcode by pressing some touchscreen buttons and a physical button. The flaw has been verified to everyone’s satisfaction by the techies and non-techies alike, according to an SC Magazine story.

It appears that the passcode bypass security flaw will work on some iPhone models and not others. It looks like the iPhone 3G and 4 are vulnerable and the iPhone 3GS is not, though there may be some dispute on the phone model issue. Despite, on those phones where it is possible to bypass the security code entry, it is possible to both make calls and send emails if you have simple physical access to the phone.

One security expert, Alan Bentley of Lumension, explains “The reported flaw in the iOS4 operating system comes as absolutely no surprise. With the mass adoption of high profile devices like the iPhone, it was only a matter of time before cyber criminals turned their attention to this new data hotbed and began to find ways to crack the codes and unlock the valuable assets within them. In addition to the obvious impact this threat could have on consumers, businesses worldwide have issued iPhones to employees to support mobile working. With the vulnerability potentially exposing reams of personal and corporate data, this is a threat Apple must tackle quickly. Until now, security concerns over smartphones have been about protecting the data being sent from the device and unauthorised connectivity into corporate networks, but now users have to be equally mindful of what, or who, might get in.”

French digital security group Gemalto said Monday it had filed a official document infringement lawsuit in the United States against Google, HTC, Motorola and Samsung on grounds they had used Gemalto innovations in the Android operating system.

Gemalto supposed the technologies in question had been developed in the 1990s at its research facilities in Texas, where the lawsuit has been filed in federal court.

“This lawsuit is necessary to protect our investment in innovation,” a Gemalto orator thought in a announcement.

“The technologies we develop and associated intellectual property rights are essential to Gemalto’s future.”

Smart-phones running on the Google-developed Android system have dominated US sales in the last six months, eclipsing Research in Motion’s Blackberry device and Apple’s iPhone, according to a recent study by the Nielsen Institute.

The marketing firm Gartner last month estimated that Android, launched in late 2008, would this year become the second most-widely used system in mobile telephones the world over.

Android’s market share is forecast by Gartner to hit 17.7 percent this year from 3.9 percent in 2009.

Samsung Focus: Omnia 7 Similarities

Posted by arm On October - 24 - 2010

As we all discern, Microsoft has loads of work to do to actually get their foot in the door in the mobile business, subsequent droops for instance the Windows Mobile and the Kin range. Microsoft are now introducing Windows Phone 7 to various gadgets for example the Samsung Focus and the way we see it, is that this is going to be make or break for Microsoft in the world of mobile phones  as the antagonism is so fierce from Apple, Android, RIM and others.

On top of the Samsung Focus and the similarities with its European counterpart the Omnia 7. As reported by engadget both apparatus have the following hardware features 8GB of internal storage, 5-megapixel camera, 4 inch touch screen, 1GHz CPU and RAM / ROM 512 MB and 1GB

These are just some of the similarities so head on over to engadget for the full review.

The first Windows 7 phones went on sale on Thursday 21st October as we predicted previously in Europe, New Zealand and Australia. Regrettably US consumers will need to wait until the 8th November to get their hands on it. Why do you think this has not gone on sale straight into the US? Are Microsoft thinking that they will not be able to cope with the sales?

So what is the prophecy in sales for the Windows Phone 7 mobile handsets? Well back in May they thought that they would achieve sales of 30m by the end of 2011. Apple has sold almost 40m in the previous quarters. Do you really think that it will take off almost as much as the Apple products? Individually, I don’t think so!

Dell Windows 7 Venue Pro handset

Posted by arm On October - 24 - 2010

We can now bring you an update on the Dell Venue Pro, which according to Ionut Arghire from softpedia.com, the UK can get their hands on the gadget as quick as 8th November. In the meantime it seems consumers in the US have to wait a little longer, hopefully before the festive season.

Garmin-ASUS Partnership Will End Starting in January

Posted by arm On October - 23 - 2010

You had to know it was upcoming, folks. It’s been thrown out there that Garmin and ASUS – the duo that brought us cell phones for instance T-Mobile’s Garminfone, the A10, the Nuvifone, and more – will not be renewing their contract once it expires in January of 2011. This follows mumbles that the launch of the Garminfone was a commercial and critical failure, over and above other mobile phones beneath their joint umbrella across Europe and North America.

The stratagem to mingle phone and GPS made sense back when this partnership was first inked, but the market has changed so significantly since then. As the smartphone market grows quicker than we could’ve hoped for, innovation knows no limits and knows not how to slow down. Google’s own Android comes pre-installed with one of the most comprehensive maps and navigation suites you can find, and many of their competitors either do the same or offer maps and navigation via download.

And while Google Maps doesn’t provide the same experience as what Garmin-ASUS’ products does – installed maps for data-independent navigation – there are many options in the market that offer that fine unconventional for a much cheaper price than what you’d have to pay for a latest phone.

So the prospect of a GPS handset becomes unfruitful, because all smartphones are now GPS phones. At this instant, if Garmin wants to take benefit of the flourishing smartphone market, their only choice will be and should be to get their applications up into app stores for every foremost mobile operating system.

They already have a head start with Android, so don’t be surprised to see them making their way to the market sometime next year. As for ASUS? Well… I guess they go back to a healthy peripheral strategy and churning out more PCs that no one ever hears or cares about since the introduction of the Eee.

Supply problems for Aussie WP7 launch

Posted by arm On October - 23 - 2010

Mobile phone manufacturers are battling to provide stock of their Windows Phone 7 devices to Australian telcos, with some consumers fuming over the limited range and lack of supply.

Telstra yesterday was the first telco to begin selling a Windows Phone 7 apparatus in Australia, the HTC 7 Mozart. But according to Telstra’s director of device management and operations, Richard Fink, only 11 of its stores will initially stock them.

Fink said today some stores sold out of stock yesterday but more was arriving for the weekend. He said Telstra would begin selling the LG Optimus 7 Q from November 9.

Vodafone Hutchison Australia had said last week that it would begin selling the HTC 7 Trophy in its stores from yesterday, but this did not eventuate. A spokeswoman said the Trophy would now be available next week.

An Optus spokeswoman said it would begin selling the LG Optimus 7 and Samsung Omnia 7 phones by the end of next week but stock would be limited.

“The first release will be a limited release but we obviously have put in provisions for more stock,” the lecturer said.

But a Samsung spokesman contradicted Optus by saying he did not believe Omnia 7 devices would reach Optus stores until the first week of November. Later, the Samsung spokesman said that there would be limited stock in some Optus stores from next week.

Optus clients will be able to bundle the phones with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Kinect accessory or with a HP Mini netbook.

Microsoft, which has begun promoting Windows Phone 7 heavily and this week flew internet phenomenon Isaiah Mustafa to Australia to help with marketing, is understood to be concerned at the lack of stock.

“We don’t have enough stock, or as much as we’d like,” alleged Microsoft developer evangelist David Glover.

“It’s all coming on stream and there’s enough there to kickstart the process.”

But Glover said developer support in Australia was strong, and hundreds of apps were being added to Microsoft’s app marketplace each week.

“We fill up [developer] workshops just from Twitter. We barely push them. We’ve filled up six workshops around the country,” he thought.

Telsyte research director and principal mobile analyst Foad Fadaghi said, regardless of supply issues, first day demand appeared “a little bit underwhelming”.

LG Cookie Plus Review

Posted by arm On October - 22 - 2010

Gingerbread, Snikerdoodles, Chocolate chip, Biscotti, Brownies and Drop cookies are appetizing and exceptionally easy to cook. Oops, did we forget that we are writing for a mobile website and not a gourmet one? Well not really, you see cookies are a part of much coveted dishes that nobody can resist, not even handset manufacturers. Since we could not discover a probable reason behind why LG would give one of its handsets such a delightful, crusty and crispy name, we assume it was simply for the love of this delicacy. As the LG Cookie Plus GS500v made its way to our review desk, we readied ourselves to dive into its sea of features. So here we offer you a detailed recipe of what the handset tasted like on sampling.

Apparently, the handset does undeniably touch your heart even though it had not been done up very ornately. Crafted in a simplistic yet elegant design, it is painted in a uniform black hue leaving aside the green patch housing the camera on the back of the phone. This cookie has been baked in an adorable curvy appearance furnishing three circular buttons just below its screen. The first and the last keys are for accepting and rejecting calls, correspondingly while the center one is to access the main menu or favorite applications. Habitually subconsciously we try to assess the phone’s feel in our hands before purchasing. This assessment unintentionally does affect our decisions. So as our fingers first grasped the phone’s sheath, the smooth rubbery texture augmented the grip on it.

The rounded edges of the LG Cookie Plus handset housed volume controls, a dedicated camera key, another for locking or unlocking the gadget, micro USB port and 3.5mm headset jack. The phone box carried an assortment enlisting a battery, charger, 2GB memory card, USB cable, stereo ear headphone, an LG PC Suite driver CD along with the user manual. Flaunting a 7.6cm TFT touchscreen, this phone touts to offer a 240 x 400 pixel resolution coupled with three way navigation.
