The Luxembourg-based VoIP company Skype declared the highly projected release of Skype for Android today. Smartphones that runs on Android OS version 2.1 or above can now download the app. The app will allow Android smartphone clientele worldwide to make free Skype-to-Skype calls over Wi-Fi or through mobile data connection such as GPRS, EDGE, 3G.
The app also allows users to orchestrate their Skype contacts with the native address book on a user’s Android phone. Other typical Skype functions now obtainable to Android customers, for example sending instant message, chat, receive and make calls through a Skype account online phone number. Additionally, that app provides customers the ability to make low rate Skype calls to landline or mobile devices.
Mark Douglas, Product Manager of Android alleged:
“The Skype experience is ubiquitous today. More and more people are using Skype to do things together when apart. With the addition of Android, we are pleased that Skype is now available on three of the most popular mobile platforms today: Android, iOS and Symbian.”
Skype for Android 2.1 and 2.2 (AKA FROYO) has been tested fruitfully by Skype on copious Android-based phones including the HTC Desire and Legend, Google Nexus One, Motorola Milestone XT720, and Motorola Milestone. The app also supports ample range of languages which includes Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Swedish, Polish, Russian, Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
