The first quarter of tjis year bore good results for the mobile phone market as the market grew by 19.8% as compared to the same period during last year. The estimate has come from research firm IDC. The growth has mainly been achieved by the growth in the high-end smartphone market in emerging markets across the globe. In a statement IDC has said that with smartphones being made available to a wide range of people, the same has provided an impetus to the market. Meanwhile IDC has also said that it expects the sales of mobile phones to be driven by smartphones through 2015.
Though Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia remained the top mobile phone vendor in the world as per shipments, the market share of the company slipped to 29.2% during the first quarter of 2011 as compared to 34.7% during the same period last year. Market share of other brands such as Samsung and LG too suffered during the first three months of 2011.
