The newest Which? survey concerning mobile handset expenditure which questioned 1271 adults aged 16 or over has shown that we in the UK are prone to spending too much with contract packages.

According to Which?, 10 million users in the UK overpay for their mobile phones, claiming that we are paying extra on extra texts, call-time, and data allowance because of going over the monthly allowance from network providers.

The results that Which? claim are “not surprising” have also revealed that over 6 million consumers have no idea that they are reaching or have exceeded monthly limit for call minutes and 5 million didn’t know about their text and data allowance limits.

The survey also showed that we don’t tend to look around for the best deals or are frightened of change as the survey revealed that 18 million users have never even switched mobile providers.

Tom McLennan, head of Which? said that, “You could be spending hundreds of pounds more than you need to on your mobile every year if you’re not on the right tariff.”

McLennan also recommended that consumers who are going over their limits should amend their bills and search for better tariffs to suit their phoning and texting needs.

However, McLennan also claimed that the opposite circumstances was also true, that “If you never go over your agreed line rental, it’s because you’re not using up your allowance so you may be able to save money by finding a cheaper tariff that reflects your usage.”

Sony Ericsson Hallon appears in spy shots – Anzu too?

Posted by arm On January - 2 - 2011

You remember a few days ago when it was announced that Sony Ericsson was planning two new gasgets – the Hallon and the Anzu? Well, spy shots have emerged of handsets that looks astonishingly like at least one of them.

The first is the Hallon, and fits perfectly with the information our well-placed source gave us – it’s a Sony Ericsson Vivaz rebooted with enhanced hardware (ie a capacitive screen) and Android 2.3.

The top of the handset houses the microUSB slot as well as a bowed exterior, mimicking the ‘human curvature’ design of the Vivaz, so it’s almost certain we’ll be seeing this at Mobile World Congress.

The next cell phone was snapped in China, and while we’re waiting for the Anzu to rear its head, it’s improbable that this is the one given the smaller screen.

The mystery device has been tipped to come with a 3-inch screen – much slighter than the Anzu’s reported 4-inch effort, and also comes with a superb graphic processing and benchmark score – is this a PSP Phone sidekick?

Given Sony Ericsson looks likely to be opening an Android gaming portal called Xperia Play that seems a real possibility – roll on MWC when all these mysteries should be exposed.

Qtel Declares SMS-and-Win Contest is Not Mobile Gambling

Posted by arm On December - 28 - 2010

Several individuals grumbled to germane authorities in the State of Qatar (known locally as Dawlat Qatar) that a trivia contest from the Qatar Telecom — once the emirate’s elite telecommunication provider – has been enabling mobile phone gambling.

Qtel’s Executive Director Adel Mutawa countered that participants in the encouragement are receiving free digital content for instance ring tones and wallpaper graphics for each text message sent by the customer’s mobile phone. Each message costs 4 Qatari Riyal (QR), the equivalent of $1.10.

Since Qatar is an Arab emirate roughly solely populated by Muslims, betting is banned and illegitimate. Nonetheless, Mutawa rationalized that the offer is not gambling online because the contestants are not wagering to win or lose money. Moderately, the contestants are learning of Qatar’s cultural traditions and heritage, for instance daily practices, geographic data, and historical facts and figures.

The contest was initiated last October enabling Qtel customers to win 1,000 QR ($274.73) or a Samsung smartphone (which would provide access to Android casinos). The grand prize, worth considerably surplus the 4QR stake, is a Porsche 911. All things considered, the Qatar government is unlikely to accept Mutawa’s declaration as the last word on the subject.

SMS-and-Win trivia contests are only one method by which mobile phones aid gamblers in Qatar. A popular method of organizing an illegal gambling den is for an event organizer to send a text message to 20 or 25 prospective gamblers when a home owner goes away on vacation or a business trip.

No issue what mobile gadget you have, “Santa Command” can make Christmas a little more delicate and a little more magical for a little loved one in your life. This free iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad app allows you to, as the name suggests, command Santa to do a whole host of things. It’s uncertain accurately how many he’ll do, but just keep typing in orders and he’ll either perform or shrug them off.

Most Santa trackers will cost $1, but for free you can also just go to Google Maps on your phone. Some apps you already have may have also added a Christmas upgrade, like “Star Walk,” the $2.99 app for iPhones and $4.99 for iPads. The app, which normally lets users point their gadgets at the sky and see what constellations are around, has a free upgrade for existing owners that lets users point and follow Santa as well.

Send a Call from Santa

Google Voice is also offering a neat new service for free. It’s not really an app, butSendACallFromSanta.com lets users type in a child’s name, select some of his or her interests and gift wishes and type in a number. Then, Santa will call with a personalized message for that child.

Super Dance Christmas

Lastly, what would be the winter holiday season without inserting yourself into a virtual gnome outfit and doing a jig to give your friends and family a good laugh? Well, apps like “Super Dance Christmas” for just 99 cents, allow punters to skip the computer this year and instead do it all from your iPhone.

Samsung’s Galaxy S reaching 10 mln in global sales

Posted by arm On December - 25 - 2010

A few months ago, the mobile phone  industry responded with some cynicism when Samsung whispered it anticipated to sell some 10 million Galaxy S smartphones by the end of December. Nevertheless, new figures from Samsung seem to specify the company’s forecasts were appealing close to the mark: Samsung preclaimed earlier this week that it has sold some 9.3 million Galaxy S handsets worldwide, and expected to hit to 10 million mark by the end of 2010.

The petition of the Galaxy S smartphones is based in part on their 1 GHz Samsung Hummingbird processors and 4-inch AMOLED displays. Nevertheless, part of the phone’s sales success can be attributed in part to the rising fortunes of Google’s Android platform, over and above Samsung’s product strategy. pretty than being a singular gadget in all markets (like the iPhone 4), the Galaxy S is essentially a line of smartphones, with minor variations between them on different carriers. In the United States, Galaxy S cell phones launched nearly concurrently on all chief carriers—with one model (the Sprint Epic 4G) perhaps representing the most significant variation on the Galaxy S design, with 4G service, front-facing camera, and a slide-out QWERTY keypad.
