Google loses market share in Android Phones segment

Posted by arm On June - 23 - 2011

Google’s Android share of the smartphone OS market fell slightly in the bigin of this year. Android’s share of the market was at 52.4 per cent at the end of last year and had dropped to 49.5 per cent by March. Apple’s iPhone increased its share of the market over the same period, growing from 17.2 per cent to 29.5 per cent. RIM’s BlackBerry continued the steady decline which has been ongoing for more than a year, dropping from 37.8 per cent of the market a year ago to just 13.8 per cent in March. It’s hard to draw firm conclusions from Android’s decline over one three month period but at least one analyst has described it as the beginning of the end. Though a new iPhone is widely expected to launch in September, it had been told by an unnamed source that Apple would launch a new iPhone with a “radical new case design” as early as mid-August.

Google TV topping for Android Ice Cream?

Posted by arm On April - 6 - 2011

Take this one with a dash of salt (or should that be a pinch of sprinkles?) but Google TV could be landing on your Android phone or tablet after the prologue of the Ice Cream. Google is planning a big Google TV flavoured Ice Cream proclamation at its I/O conference next month – with the Big G looking to amalgamate the AOSP (Android Open Source Code) for three diverse platforms; Google TV, Honeycomb 3.0 (tablets), and Gingerbread 2.3 (phones). This could mean that Ice Cream integrates the three areas, and goes cross-platform with its IPTV platform.

Phandroid has also actually discovered that the merging could even be the rationale that the Honeycomb coding isn’t leaving the Google plex for now. It’s undoubtedly a move that makes sagacity, as Google TV hasn’t unerringly set the world alight (did someone say “flop”?) and networks haven’t been all that keen to get on board. But, with the mobile TV market intensifying speedily, the panorama of getting their shows accurately into the palms of viewer’s hands might be too much of a lure for the broadcasters to resist. We’ll be watching how this one develops with a keen eye, so be sure to check back on Pocket-lint for regular updates.

In the mobile market which is already filled up with so many Android smartphones, Samsung Google Nexus S is aimed to take Android experience to an entirely new level. Just like its predecessor Nexus One, Google Nexus S boasts of clean installation of Android and has been fabricated with direct inputs from Android team of Google. Samsung Google Nexus S aims to bring pure Android experience to users and the device boasts of several interesting features.

When you first look at Samsung Google Nexus S, you will notice that the gadget looks pretty much similar to Samsung Galaxy S. Though it is not an exact replica of Galaxy S, yet has taken many cues from it. Samsung Google Nexus S looks elegant and is solidly built and regardless of its big screen it can easily be held on one hand. The smartphone measures 123.9 x 63 x 10.9 mm and weighs approximately 130 grams.

The phone sports a 4 inches Super AMOLED capacitive display which is capable of displaying 16M colors of resolution measuring 480×800 pixels. Since the screen is AMOLED, hence the colors displayed are sharp and vibrant. Readability of the screen in sunlight is also pretty good. One of the standout features of Samsung Google Nexus S handset is its operating system. Nexus S is one of the first smartphones to run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. Because the phone runs on Android 2.3 OS, you can expect a lot of fun filled features to be available in the phone. The phone is also equipped with chips enabling Near Field Communications (NFC).

Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) now in Google Nexus S

Posted by arm On January - 5 - 2011

It’s the handset that you have never seen. Following Google’s seriously acclaimed but commercially stillbornNexus One, CEO Eric Schmidt guiltily announced that there would be no sequel. Yet a few short months later the first tantalising glimpses of an all-new Nexus mobile phone began to ship, proving that Google hasn’t quite given up on the thought of creating its own ‘pure’ mobile experience just yet – and for that we should be tremendously thankful.

And the word ‘pure’ summarises the Nexus S quite aptly. Not just in corporeal terms, but in regards to what’s running under the bonnet: like its predecessor, the Nexus S is rocking an entirely unmolested version of the Android OS. In this case, it’s the freshly-baked Gingerbread – codenamed as Android 2.3 – and this handset is the first (and currently only) place to get it. In the picture below you can see the accessories intended for Google Nexus S Smartphones.
