A 10 percentage-point jump in share from a year earlier gave Taoyuan, Taiwan-based HTC 24 percent of the world’s largest smartphone market in the third quarter, ahead of Samsung’s 21 percent, Palo Alto, California-based researcher Canalys said in a statement yesterday. Apple fell to third at 20 percent while RIM, maker of the BlackBerry, had 9 percent. HTC, which made the world’s first phone using Google Inc.’s Android in 2008, benefited from strong relationships with U.S. carriers and made different models for each operator. Apple’s iPhone 4S and new devices from Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung may help the two global smartphone leaders gain share in the U.S. this quarter as HTC forecasts its first shipment decline in almost two years.

Runnymede features a massive 4.7-inch display alike to the very much an Android-powered companion phone to the just-announced; HTC Titan that has been unveiled for the Windows Phone 7 OS. HTC Runnymede will hit the market with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and is covered in an all-white chassis with 4 standard Android touch buttons. Unfortunately, no official details have been unveiled yet about the HTC Runnymede by the Company; however it’s likely to sport a 4.7-inch qHD display with WVGA resolution, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and an 8-megapixel camera with dual LED flash. Further the phone is equipped with a 1.5GHz single-core processor, 768MB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB internal storage and quite interestingly, the report states that the Sound quality and image capture are said to be top-notch, with the Beats Audio-infused device allegedly presenting up a class-leading camera that might even best the highly-anticipated Apple’s iPhone 5.

Bearing a remarkable resemblance to the yet unannounced HTC Glamor; which we consider is intended to be smartphone targeted at fashion-conscious women, and interestingly the HTC Pico has appeared bearing a friendly blue casing which may possibly indicate that the phone will hit the market with a variety of color options. On the other hand, the features of the HTC Pico are almost alike to the Wildfire S in the US, which indicates that the device would be hitting the market with Android 2.3 Gingerbread underneath HTC Sense Zero, which we think that it might be a streamlined version of the Sense UI designed for lower-end phones. HTC Pico will run on a 600MHz single-core CPU and 384MB of RAM, powering a 3.2-inch HVGA display with 480×320 resolutions, equipped with 5MP camera on back, with a 1230mAh battery for power.

In the case of the HTC Ruby, we may never see the device be released with the lovely jewel name attached to it – instead today we’ve got news that this cool futuristic mother of a smartphone will be dubbed “HTC Amaze 4G” for its release on USA carrier T-Mobile, and may well be released right alongside the Samsung Hercules relatively soonish.

A teardown of the HTC Thunderbolt Treveals one of the highest bill of materials (BOM) ever seen on a cell phone. Components for the popular 4G LTE smartphone cost $262. It is significantly higher than the $171.35 cost of Verizon iPhone elements and comparable to media tablets. The most expensive element of the Thunderbolt was its 4G LTE wireless standard, which made up $39.75 of the tab. Most of this expense come from a first-generation LTE baseband chip, Qualcomm MDM9600. Because of the high cost of a 4G LTE standard next iPhone, rumored to support 4G LTE, will cost Apple 23 percent more – $211.10 – to make if Apple decides to use the same first-generation LTE chipsets as the Thunderbolt does.

It remains to be seen whether the next Apple iPhone set for introduction in September will support 4G LTE. However, if it does, two things are clear. First, the iPhone’s minuscule printed circuit board (PCB) will have to grow in size in order to support the first-generation LTE baseband processor as well as all the supporting chipset. Second, the next iPhone’s BOM value certainly will increase substantially compared to the iPhone 4 if LTE is implemented in the same manner as in the HTC Thunderbolt.

The phone is worth $199 with a 2 year contract, so semi-destroying the phone to reveal its components inside is a heartbreaking scenery especially if you’re not rich. According to Youtube’s video stat, the HTC Evo 3D teardown already attracted 18,000 viewers, majority are male viewers living in United States. HTC Evo 3D is the first 3D Android smartphone launched in United States. According to specs sheet, the HTC Evo 3D is a screamer with 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, two 5 MP rear shooter for shooting HD 3D or 2D videos and photos, and the phone is also capable of initiating or receiving video calls courtesy of recently hacked Skype app for Android. HTC Evo 3D is also expected to arrive in United Kingdom courtesy of Vodafone that recently dumped LG’s Optimus 3D in favor of the Taiwan based company. However, the LG Optimus 3D will arrive in UK first courtesy of Carphone Warehouse. In United States, LG is also expected to release the phone courtesy of AT&T, with a new brand name, LG Thrill 4G. Apparently, the phone will join the carrier’s HSPA+ phone lineup.

The myTouch 4G Slide may also have the best camera from HTC, which is an area they have traditionally been quite weak in compared to other smartphone manufacturers. I don’t think it can match what Nokia is doing with their cameras and the claim on the T-Mobile site that it is the “most advanced camera of any smartphone” may be a bit of a marketing phrase. Then again, I will have to give the 8 megapixel shooter a try and see for myself since I do own the Nokia N8.

It boasts a slew of high-end features, including a 4.3-inch touchscreen display with 540 x 960 qHD resolution, 1.2Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor, 3G and 4G connectivity, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense. But obviously, the best part about this new device is its three-dimensional capabilities.

The EVO 3D has two 5-megapixel cameras situated nicely on the rear, which allows you to capture photos and videos in 3D and view them on the autostereoscopic screen without special glasses, looking similar to the Nintendo 3DS portable gaming system. You can also view downloaded content formatted in 3D, as well as stream 3D content wirelessly to a 3D TV. The cameras can record video in 720p, both in 2D and 3D. Check out the video below to see it in action.

We must be getting used to slightly larger smartphones because despite the big screen it never feels oversized. However, its resolution is lower than the iPhone’s. blacks and whites aren’t as true as on that or the E7, colours are a touch over-saturated and reflections make it tricky to view in direct sun. That’s where the niggles run out, though. HTC’s Sense interface, including Friend Stream which aggregates updates across all your social networking platforms, makes the Incredible S effortless to use, helped by the lGHz Snapdragon processor. It’s every bit as slick as ihe iPhone 4 and leaves the E7 and Bold for dead.

There’s no iTunes Store, but Amazon’s MP3 Store makes for a very fine alternative, and Android Market, though lagging behind the App Store, is far better than it used to be in terms of quantity of good gear. It still sucks to use. mind you. The music player is again no iPod, but it’s functional, with a useful “find video” link to YouTube. The eight-meg stills are among Android’s best yet, though not as good as the Neo. E7 or iPhone. The dual-LED flash is prone to burning out detail. The 720p video footage just doesn’t look HD quality: next 10 the Nokia and iPhone it appears soft and blocky. With ?1 battery lasting into the second day, a big screen and Android’s intuitive interface, the Incredible S is another great 11TC Android handset. However, despite coming out almost a year after the iPhone 4, it still trails just behind it.

April was a busy month for HTC, announcing no less than seven new devices for the South African market. Apart from the Sensation superphone (featured on p5) the Taiwanese manufacturer released the HTC Flyer tablet, two Facebook integrated smartphones and three new smartphones. All of which will be on the shelves in the next month.

HTC Flyer

The HTC Flyer is of course the Taiwanese company’s first foray into the tablet market. This 7″ tablet runs HTC’s Sense interface on top of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread, not Google’s 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets) and also includes HTC’s unique Scribe Technology. Scribe basically allows you to write on-screen with a special pen and either share your creations online or save it for reference. For the brief period that we played with the device it impressed with its speed thanks to the 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, while the new 3D interface of the Sense skin looks very smart.

Facebook on ChaCha and Salsa

Social network junkies are going to adore the ChaCha and Salsa, both coming with an integrated Facebook button. Press the button and you have access to the key functions of the Facebook services that are integrated throughout the HTC Sense experience, including updating your status and sharing your location or photos. Both devices feature Android’s latest Gingerbread 2.3.3 version, with the Salsa sporting a 3.4″, 480 x 320 resolution touch display. It was rather the ChaCha that grabbed our attention with its integrated QWERTY keyboard, slanted body and 2.6″ (480 x 320) screen. It is all the new Black-Berry Bold 9780 should have been and we got the impression that if the ChaCha featured services such as BBM and BIS it would have been really tough times for RIM.

Smart, Smarter, Smartest

Finally HTC introduced three updated models of previous HTC smartphones. The Wildfire gets improved in the form of the budget conscious Wildfire S, HTC’s smallest phones ever. Inspired by the HTC Legend smartphone’s aluminium design, the HTC Desire S boasts Qualcomm’s new 1 GHz Snapdragon MSM8255 processor and a 3.7″ (480 x 800 pixels) Gorilla Glass display and Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but unfortunately it does not include the new HTC Sense interface as found on the premium Sensation. The Incredible S, with its special contoured back, boasts the same processor as the Desire S and also some very impressive multimedia capabilities, such as surround sound, an eight megapixel camera, a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera and 720p video recording.

Nokia, a Finland based multinational organization manufactures mobile devices and also offers internet services like games, maps, music, etc. through its Ovi application. Nokia phones are known for its advanced technologies as well as highly user friendly mobile phones.

Microsoft has implemented strict minimum hardware requirements on anyone manufacturing devices on which Windows Phone 7 (WP7) will run. The most important of these is that a 1 GHZ processor (or better) must be present. This ensures the phones are speedy and reports of a lagging Windows 7 experience do not surface, which is definitely true of the HTC Mozart, a phone swift when browsing pictures and opening apps. To differentiate the Mozart from a “generic” WP7 device tag, HTC paid a lot of attention to the musical qualities of the phone (Mozart, get it?). Included is SRS WOW HD (via the Sound Enhancer app) for clearer and more expansive audio quality. Also included are an eight megapixel camera and 720p video recording, so multimedia on this phone is really strong.

WP7, launched at the end of last year, departs from the PC-like feel of Windows 6.5 and looks uniformly cool thanks to a design conscious interface. You have your Start screen that is populated by “tiles”, which can be anything from links to your SMSs, Internet Explorer, different mail accounts or certain apps. Slide the screen and you have all your different apps stacked beneath each other in one long list. Any one of these can be moved to the main Start screen for easy access and become one of the moveable tiles.
Despite looking the part, Windows Phone feels behind the rest of the OS pack (bar Symbian). Which it is, seeing that Android for example has had three years to progress through the birth pains and upgrades WP7 still need to grapple with. WP7 is currently very bad with multi-tasking, has few apps in Windows Marketplace and delivered problems typically associated with a new OS. We also hated the fact that you can’t simply drag and drop files to the phone, having to use Zune media player to sync.

The Taiwanese manufacturer calls the Sensation a superphone due to Qualcomm’s 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon MSM8260 processor, which not only enables a better all-round processing performance, but also gives the gadget a graphical boost. The Sensation operates on Google’s new Android 2.3 mobile OS, along with HTC’s latest Sense skin, and can record full HD video in 1080p resolution. More HTC on p20.

HTC unveiled its successor, the HTC Incredible S, at Mobile World Congress 2011 and it’s finally made its way to the States and back to Verizon Wireless as the HTC Droid Incredible 2. Available now for $199.99 with a two-year contract, the Android device has some large shoes to fill and is facing a lot more competition this time around. Is it up to the task? The answer is yes and no. The HTC Droid Incredible 2 looks pretty plain, largely because the controls beneath the display aren’t visible when the phone is turned off or in standby mode. It may not be very striking, but there’s also a beauty in its clean and minimalistic look. Plus, that’s not to say that the Droid Incredible 2 is completely boring. If you flip the phone over, you’ll see that the back features a topographic design, much like on the HTC Droid Incredible.

HTC has packed the phone with some decent features and one of the hallmark features of the phone is its HTC Sense UI. HTC Freestyle looks a very elegant phone, even though it is carved out of plastic. HTC Freestyle dimensions measures 106.7×56.6×12.5 mm which makes the phone pretty good for carrying out long conversations. The phone weighs 128 grams and the curved edges of the device give it a pretty chic look. Just like other phones of HTC, the phone feels very solid on hands. However, we did not like the battery door which has to be opened from the bottom of the phone. We would have preferred a standard battery cover. The phone sports a 3.2 inches TFT capacitive touch screen which is capable of displaying 256 K colors of resolution measuring 320×480 pixels. Reading small texts and browsing the web pages can be a bit difficult and sunlight legibility of the screen in sunlight is also an issue. In direct sunlight, the display can become completely dark which can be annoying sometimes. Below the display you have four buttons while above the display you will find an LED light and an earpiece.
