GIVE YOUR HANDSET THE SIM IT DESERVES

Posted by arm On June - 9 - 2010

Everybody knows that if you want to get the top contract on a mobile phone tariff, the only way to go is with a sim only package. Not only are you not tied down to long deals on limited cell phone selections, but there is a much wider array of tariff mixtures available. When novel and more astonishing devices seem to be coming out every week, it doesn’t make sense to be tied into long handset contracts when you could have an easily negotiable, immediately unreliable sim only deal. Let’s say you’d bought an HTC Desire when it came out, expecting the novel iPhone 4 to be a total dissatisfaction. After yesterday’s proclamation maybe you’ve changed your mind and decided that you have to get the iPhone 4. If you go down the normal route of a deal deal, then you would have no choice but to stick with your Desire and look on jealously at your friends’ iPhone 4s. But what if you had gone down the Sim only route. You can get sim free, unlocked editions of most handsets these days, and if you do, then all you want to do is pair it with a sim only contract and you’ve got a much more versatile way of using phones. When the next big thing comes along, just sell off your old handset, get the innovative one unlocked and sim free and pop your sim from your sim only contract straight in.

Today, Samsung’s formally unveiling the Samsung Galaxy i5500 – otherwise known as the Corby phone – and it’ll be headed to Italy. We initial heard about the low in the middle of last month, and its leak was followed by a series of verifications during the standard guarantee outlets a cell phone normally has to go through.

It’ll be running Android 2.1 with a custom interface by Samsung (we’re not sure if they’re calling this TouchWiz, but it’s reminiscent to what we’ve seen on their touchscreen feature phones). Other specs comprise a 2.8-inch QVGA LCD touchscreen, a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, WiFi, a 600Mhz processor, 100MB of ROM, and will ship with a 1GB MicroSD card.

You’ll also get the standard set of 3G connectivity bands bands (HSDPA supported). Wind and TIM are said to be the operators that are offering the gadget. If you’re in Italy, expect to be able to snatch this smartphone up sometime next week.

Popularity of LTE mobile broadband ‘is mounting’

Posted by arm On June - 8 - 2010

Long-term evolution LTE mobile broadband is budding in popularity, it has been alleged. Nokia Siemens held that it had agreed to build 12 LTE networks and that the project was just getting going with a total of 30 planned, according to Reuters. Thorsten Robrecht, Nokia Siemens’ head of LTE product management, told the news service: “It’s unbelievable how the momentum is growing, this is what we are seeing with our users.” The chief demand for LTE has come principally from the US and Europe and has been driven by data usage from USB sticks and a dongle, with mobile devices also expected to ramp up demand for better mobile broadband. LTE is comparable to 4th-generation (4G) mobile broadband technology in the speeds it can deliver, which can be as high as 1Gbps. The European Commission (EC) newly permitted rules that will help foster the next generation of mobile broadband by freeing up the channels previously used by analogue television. Digital agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes urged member states to allocate the 800 MHz frequency to mobile internet services to assist the roll-out of 4G technology.

Motorola Milestone XT720

Posted by arm On June - 7 - 2010

With the current release of the Motorola XT720 smartphone, Motorola has a new proved to the world that you cannot actually count Motorola out of the race when it comes to mobile manufacturing. The recently annunced device is amongst the slimmest Android phones in the mobile market and can support high speed HSPA networks for internet speeds of around 10.2 Mbps.

The smartphone appears with a HDMI cable that allows the owners to view the recorded videos directly on their HDTV’s. The phone comes with a memory card of 8 GB contained in its sales packet and the memory slot can support a memory card maximum of 32 GB.

Conversely, there are still some lapses that Motorola needs to work on- one such drift is the fact that this cell phone runs on the Android OS version 2.1 and not the latest Android 2.2, one was expecting that a business trying to recapture the market would turn up with something new, but that did not happen. Above and beyond, it even lacks Motorola’s significantly famous environment Motoblur.

“Milestone XT720 is one of the most powerful phones in Motorola’s current smartphone range. Slim, sophisticated and technically savvy, Milestone XT720 is a high performance touchscreen device designed for those who are actively engaged in both their work and social lives”, declares Ralf Gerbershagen, VP and General Manager for Motorola’s Mobile Devices business in Western Europe. And quite correctly too this new mobile phone on the blocks seems like a good competition to the best of the best in the business right now.

HTC Legend and Desire have just received OTA updates and if you’re hoping for Android 2.2 Froyo already, keep your pants on, as these are mere bug fixes that you’re getting. The software update is only 4MB in size, which is nothing, compared to major enhancements.  We have to mention that HTC didn’t exactly detail the updates, but the folks of XDA Developers seem to think that the new software includes new radio images, a HQ option for the YouTube app and it also solves the Facebook/unknown contact issues.

iPhone 4 HD Now Available

Posted by arm On June - 7 - 2010

Did you mark your calendar? Set all your appointments to tomorrow? Good. Because Apple has officially announced the next iPhone model. It’s called the iPhone 4, and for all intents and purposes, it’s basically a juggernaut of a device all shoved into a ridiculously small sized frame. There’s a lot of returning features, and yet, all of those returning features are getting a pretty big upgrade for their brand new appearance on the market.

For example, the iPhone 4 features a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display. However, it adds what Apple is calling a Retina display, which is rocking a 960×640 display. There’s 326 pixels per inch, and just in case you’re not caught up in your pixels per inch information, the human eye can only see 300 ppi. So, Apple basically made sure that the display looks as crisp as humanly possible at all times. The phone itself is only 9.3 millimeters thin, and the front and back are both manufactured of aluminosilcate glass, which is then subsequently chemically enhanced to be 30 times harder than plastic. This in turn makes it far more resistant to scratches. Both the front and back feature an oil-resistant coating /oleophobic?/, while the edges are made of a single band of stainless steel.

On the back, there is  a 5MP camera, featuring 5x zoom and 720p HD video capture, and autofocus. It has a backside illuminated sensor, which should make for low-level lighting easier to take your snapshots or capture video. It has also a built-in LED flash. And of course, it’s featuring iPhone OS 4, which has actually been renamed iOS4 (iOS for short). So you’ll get Folders, Unified Inbox, and every other great feature that iOS 4 declared months back.

You can choose from white or black models as well. You’ll be able to get your pre-ordering on starting June 15th, and the devices will be ready for your pick-up on June 24th. Also, keep in mind that the pricing is for new, two-year agreements. So, what do you think? Is the iPhone 4 the smartphone you’ve been waiting for?

Hands-On Impressions of Dell’s Streak and Aero

Posted by arm On June - 5 - 2010

Let’s get one thing straight. The Dell Streak, due to be obtainable from O2 in the U.K. tomorrow and likely from AT&T in the U.S. sometime next month, is not an Android tablet PC, despite the company’s self-declaration of same, and is not a competitor to the iPad or an iPad killer. I got my hands on a pre-production Streak prototype, and Dell’s more predictable Aero Android phone, for around a half-hour yesterday. And now that I’ve held it and played with it, I can tell you the Streak is not a tablet, it’s just a really large handset. A nice device, but still a cellphone. Why isn’t the Streak a tablet? As Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once described his legal definition of pornography, I know it when I see it. Streak has a 5-inch 800 x 480 pixel screen, and that’s not large enough to be defined as a “PC,” tablet or otherwise. It walks like an Android mobile phone and it talks, literally, like an Android cellphone. Ergo, it’s a handset.

Streak Features & Design:The Dell Streak is intended to be held in portrait mode – when you hold the Streak in its OS default landscape view, like a tablet, the now-familiar Android Home, Menu and Back buttons are stacked vertically on the side, unlike a tablet. When held in landscape, the Streak’s volume and on/off switch are on the top left perimeter, requiring an untablet-like reach-around to get to these oft-used controls.

Phone Functionality:Don’t get me wrong: I actually liked the Streak – as a handset. Its 5-inch screen makes a great viewfinder for the 5 MP camera and camcorder, if it has one, and is the perfect compromise size for mobile Web surfing. Its touch scroll is nearly iPhone smooth and offers multi-touch for pinch-and-zooming.

Battery Life:Streak’s got a hefty 1530 mAh battery, which likely accounts for most of its weight, but we’ll have to wait for a more formal review to determine real life battery life.
