One of our favorite smartphones from 2010 was the HTC Droid Incredible. HTC unveiled its successor, the HTC Incredible S, at Mobile World Congress 2011 and it’s finally made its way to the States and back to Verizon Wireless as the HTC Droid Incredible 2. Available now for $199.99 with a two-year contract, the Android device has some large shoes to fill and is facing a lot more competition this time around. Is it up to the task? The answer is yes and no. The HTC Droid Incredible 2 looks pretty plain, largely because the controls beneath the display aren’t visible when the phone is turned off or in standby mode. It may not be very striking, but there’s also a beauty in its clean and minimalistic look. Plus, that’s not to say that the Droid Incredible 2 is completely boring. If you flip the phone over, you’ll see that the back features a topographic design, much like on the HTC Droid Incredible.

The first quarter of tjis year bore good results for the mobile phone market as the market grew by 19.8% as compared to the same period during last year. The estimate has come from research firm IDC. The growth has mainly been achieved by the growth in the high-end smartphone market in emerging markets across the globe. In a statement IDC has said that with smartphones being made available to a wide range of people, the same has provided an impetus to the market. Meanwhile IDC has also said that it expects the sales of mobile phones to be driven by smartphones through 2015.

Though Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia remained the top mobile phone vendor in the world as per shipments, the market share of the company slipped to 29.2% during the first quarter of 2011 as compared to 34.7% during the same period last year. Market share of other brands such as Samsung and LG too suffered during the first three months of 2011.

RIM did its best yesterday to convince skeptical financial analysts that its disappointing outlook for the current quarter is just the reflection of a few blips in execution, rather than anything deep-seated. But unless it manages to wow the mobile world with demonstrations of the BlackBerry 7.0 software at BlackBerry World next week, it could be in for a rough year. But it’s true nonetheless: Research in Motion is losing ground at the higher end of the smartphone market against the iPhone, Android phones, and maybe even a few Windows Mobile 7 phones as it scrambles to get new product out the door. Current-generation BlackBerries look boring against newer phones and the BlackBerry software isn’t nearly as competitive against more modern mobile operating systems as anyone at RIM would like, especially when it comes to things like Web browsing and available applications. That’s one reason RIM chose to launch the Playbook with new software developed by its QNX subsidiary, which it eventually hopes to bring to the BlackBerry.

Chinese PC manufacturing giant Lenovo has plans to debut its Android 3.0-powered ThinkPad Tablet come June, according to a leaked Powerpoint presentation obtained by tech reporter Joanna Stern. As the document says, the device will be powered by Honeycomb, the tablet-optimized version of Android. It will run on the Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, a chip which has virtually reached mobile-industry standard status after being featured on myriad phones and tablets debuted in 2011.

Other touted specs remain similar to the already-existing pack: Micro USB, HDMI, SD card and USB 2.0 ports are all included. 16, 32 and 64-GB versions will be offered, as well as the eventual release of 3G and 4G-enabled versions. The tablet does deviate from its brethren somewhat, but you’ll have to spend a little more to see the differences. For ages the Xperia Play was referred to by everyone as the PlayStation handset.
