After Apple and Samsung taking over the Smartphone market the other companies are struggling hard to push their line of smartphones sales. Nokia has been one the dominant companies and held the top spot in making mobile phones for more than a decade, but since two quarters the company has been falling down and down with sales. But this quarter was better than the last after the shares jumped over 8%, as results highlighted an increase in shipments of its cheaper feature phones owing to strong sales of dual-SIM handsets, which allow users to have multiple phone numbers. Nokia shipped 89.8 million feature phones in the quarter, up 8% from a year earlier.

Nokia on Wednesday took the wraps off three new smartphones, all of them running the Belle operating system, the latest upgrade to Nokia’s sturdy Symbian software. The Nokia 600, 700, and 701 will likely ship sometime in Q3 of this year, and serve as a stopgap of sorts, until Nokia, which recently partnered with Microsoft, can start rolling out handsets powered by Windows Phone 7. The Symbian Belle phones vary in processing power and size: The 600 gets a 3.2-inch display and a 5-megapixel camera, and sells for 180 euros, or about $260; the super-compact 700 gets an AMOLED display and a price tag of 270 euros, or $390; and the 701, priced at 290 euros, or $420, is kitted out with an 8-megapixel camera and a dual-LED flash, along with a 3.5 LCD display. All 3 smartphones are powered with a 1GHz processor.

Nokia’s long awaited debut Meego phone, the N9, was finally unveiled. Meego was Nokia’s high-end future platform until four months ago. No new Symbian phones were announced, and Elop pronounced himself more hopeful that a Windows model will appear by the end of the year. Nokia has several fires to fight, and one is its dramatic crash in emerging markets, which it had complacently thought were gratefully in its pocket. Three new touch screen models based on S40 were announced, all called C2, two of which support dual-SIMs.

The challenge Nokia faces here is not only from established players in the market but also from dual SIM cell phones imported from China. During the launch of the dual-SIM handsets, Prakash Katama Director, Chennai Factory of Nokia India said that though the company is a late-entrant in the dual-SIM market yet it expects to grab the top slot with its affordable pricing.

It is to be noted that of late there has been a tremendous demand for dual-SIM handsets in the country with users looking forward to keep one number for personal use while the other one is kept for professional usage. At the same time keeping dual-SIM phones allows users to use one for data and service while the other is for voice and SMS. Both the dual-SIM handsets launched by Nokia are equipped with services called Nokia Life Tools which gives consumers information on a wide range of topics such as agriculture, education, entertainment, healthcare etc. A recent report regarding dual SIM handsets was quoted by Mr Katama which said that dual-SIM phones made up nearly 40% of the mobile market.

Following the announcement that Nokia will be using Windows Phone 7 within a year, the E7 should be among its last Symbian-powered phones. Don’t get too emotional, now…

This handset combines all of Nokia’s current strengths and weaknesses. Made from anodised aluminium, it’s a well-constructed, chunky slider with a full QWERTY. Those elements have a reassuringly old-fashioned feel to them. Giving less of a warm, nostalgic glow are a 680MHz processor that’s noticeably slower than rivals, giving sluggish multi-touch, and an operating system that feels archaic next to Android, iOS or WP7. Symbian is not a pleasure to use, and the range of apps at the Ovi Store remains of lower quality and quantity than at Android Market or the Apple App Store.

The four-inch screen’s resolution is only 640×360, so movies lack the detail of the Incredible S or iPhone 4. Being AMOLED, it does produce excellent contrast areas and off-angle viewing, however. The E7 does have one killer feature and that is its eight-meg/720p camera. Stills are excellent, and you can tweak white balance, sharpness. ISO and contrast. There’s also an LED flash. The HD video capture is smooth with natural colours, too. I Iowever with its other deficiencies, including a battery that needs charging every night, the E7 is hard to recommend to anyone other than die-hard Nokia fans.

So you’re a Nokia devotee who’s longwanted a high quality touchscreen smart phone? Your long wait is over. Far better than the likes of the X6 and N97 the Nokia N8 is a neatly styled, high powered phone that feels new yet familiar. At first glance, it’s too familiar: the Symbian 3 OS looks like earlier Nokia interfaces. It’s more intuitive though, and better optimised for touch with a gentle haptic response. Pre-installed apps include the impressive BBC iPlayer widget, which can be watched on your HDTV thanks to the mini-HDMI output and supplied cable – the pin-sharp quality of the phone is substantially diminished when blown up to a 40-incher, of course. Generally, the N8 is great for video and media playback. There’s also Ovi Maps, the free satnav system.

Cleverly, you can use this for effective navigation without needing a data connection, so it’s ideal for use overseas where data costs can becr ippling. TheN8 has easily the best camera here, with a 12-meg sensor, Carl Zeiss lens, mechanical shutter and xenon flash. The only down sides are that the large sensor means the lens juts out a bit. Calling and texting are good, though we’d have liked to have been able to use the QWERTY virtual keyboard in portrait. The web browser is fast and includes Flash video playback. Best of all, the battery life is excellent; the N8 will easily last you two days between charges. This is a storming return to form for Nokia. However Symbian makes it feel more like the ultimate feature phone than a direct smartphone rival to the Desire or iPhone 4.

Fighting mobile handset felony is a solemn business and the police can’t handle it alone, that’s why they call in the proficient for example the guys from Nokia. In a unique ceremony one high-ranking Nokia chief was recently awarded an amazing approbation usually only dished out to the police force itself. Read on to find out how one Nokia security chief was caught by the fuzz… Did you know that a mobile phone, and increasingly smartphone, is stolen in about half of all street crimes? What’s more, approximately a third of cases it’s the only thing stolen. The National Mobile Phone Crime Unit exists to help lessen mobile handset related street crime not only on the streets itself but by targeting the handlers, re-programmers and exporters of stolen handsets.

It’s a sturdy, filthy and furtive world of crime and vice that needs unusual insider knowledge, which is why the Metropolitan Police reach out to the likes of Nokia and their in-house security team. At a recent Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner’s Commendation Ceremony a special award was given to one of the security big-wigs at Nokia UK. The award was given for his commitment and obligation in assisting the National Mobile handset Crime Unit in a series of covert and overt cases spanning the last five years. It’s worth bearing in mind that very few police offers ever obtain this award, and even rarer for a member of the public to be awarded one. With the intention of protect the on-going investigations, the winner’s name has not been exposed but we know who you are and thank you for all you’ve done in the line of duty! Thanks to the inexorable efforts of this Nokia employee and others like him, your mobile handset can sleep safely in its charger at night. Well done Roy!

Nokia Windows Phone devices should be amid the most advanced gadgets yet, with loads to offer punters. It’s not just hardware that Nokia can donate to the partnership with Microsoft, nevertheless, as the Finnish company can also help out when it comes to app payments. We can’t linger for the first generation of Nokia Windows Phone smartphones. From class leading cameras, to brilliant build superiority, to inspiring packaging and radio reception, there’s a lot to look forward to. Nokia can also lead the way when it comes to services, however.

Evaluated to other operating systems, Windows Phone is still in its babyhood, and as such doesn’t have a micro payment system in place that can opponent the very best. Nokia has already proved itself in this department with the Ovi Store, and offers different ways to pay for your apps on the move. From paying by credit card, with a simple to use interface that’s competent of remembering certain details so you can easily buy apps the next time you visit, to setting up billing via your network and mobile phone bill, the Ovi Store is a model of simplicity when it comes to payments. By itself, it’s a service we think would contribute entirely to the downy running of the Windows Phone Apps Marketplace.

It appears that, Nokia has decided not to unite the influential Android community. The mobile technology world is presently buzzing about Microsoft and Nokia’s declaration that they will be “Voltes five-in” soon to get more smartphone market share. According to reports, Nokia will most possibly abandon its own mobile OS Symbian and will use Windows Phone 7 as the operating system of their upcoming smartphones. Evaluated to Android and iOS, Windows Phone 7 is the youngest and the system’s app marketplace is still below 10,000 based on latest notes. Most of Android smartphone producers like Samsung, HTC and LG have their own WP7 phones.

Nokia’s conclusion to use Windows Phone 7 instead of Android is not essentially a “big surprise” because it’s perceptibly a policy to protect their name from powerful droids. It will be easier for Nokia to restore its failing name with Windows Phone 7 as OS because the society is still fresh, and the European-based business’s option to rule the Microsoft phone world is still big, compared to Android which is now the home of strong iOS competitors like HTC, Samsung and Motorola. Imagine HTC or Motorola phones in headlines because they have outsold Android-powered Nokia phones, the Finland-based company is noticeably trying to shun that.

The tie-up announced in London by Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer means that one can soon expect the phasing out of Symbian OS which has been used by Nokia for long and helped it to become one of the prominent smartphone vendors.

Notably of late, there has been a considerable rise in several mobile phone OS which has given Nokia a tough competition with the share of the company falling drastically. In the last few years there have been a considerable rise in several mobile phone OS, most notably Android. In fact Android has overtaken Symbian and with smartphones poised to become one of the prominent means by which people access internet in near future, the move by Nokia is not surprising.

However, the move by Nokia has already started raising concerns among employees working on Symbian. It was reported that about 1000 employees in the company’s headquarters walked out over apprehensions about the fortune of those who are working on Symbian. Analysts have also warned that the move can prove risky as Nokia has not revealed as to how it will regain the lost market in US with Windows Phone 7. It also needs to compete with vendors rolling out high-end phones at a cost effective point in other parts of the world. At the same time, Windows Phone 7 OS has yet to transverse a long way to match the popularity of Android, BlackBerry OS and Apple’s iOS.

The spontaneous phone is owed to launch at MWC and, from the images that have been leaked, emerges to be an updated version of the Nokia E71.

Features of the E6-00 will pleasure photographers and videocallers – the handset packs an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, as well as a front-facing videocall camera. A bursting QWERTY keypad sits below a 2.8 inch VGA screen on the front of the phone, with the screen implausible to be a touchscreen given the hefty number of controls featured on the keypad and navigation. The E6-00′s launch at MWC is set to overshadow numerous other Nokia launches, including the X7-00 and the N9 (successor to the popular Nokia N8), predominantly if rumours of its ARM processor and Symbian OS prove to be true.
