The LG DoublePlay has snuck online a couple of times in the past week, but today T-Mobile completed the DoublePlay news triple play by officially announcing the Android-powered slider. As you could probably tell by the image above, the DoublePlay not only has a main 3.5-inch touchscreen on its face, but also a second 2-inch touch panel below. The dual displays can work separately or in conjunction with one another, allowing the user to complete several tasks at once. Other specs include a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, 720p video capture, T-Mobile 4G connectivity, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Expect the LG DoublePlay to hit T-Mobile in time for the holidays for an undisclosed price. The DoublePlay isn’t the first Android phone we’ve seen with a dual touchscreen layout, but what makes LG and T-Mobile’s offering different is that it’s got a physical keyboard for those times that you absolutely, positively need the tactility that only a hardware QWERTY can provide.

The Droid 3 is a perfectly respectable handset. It’s fast, solid and well made, with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that’s one of the very best out there, and a good (if slow) camera. The 4-inch screen is large and colourful but do sample it alongside the Nexus S, say, before committing yourself to emailing and surfing on it for a full 2-year contract. The bulky design also smacks of complacency. Where HTC and Samsung are trying to broaden Android’s appeal, the macho Droid 3 is aimed directly at its core constituency of IT professionals and iPhone haters. The risk is that many of those will be happy to wait for the Droid Bionic, unveiled at CES and due to arrive imminently with a larger 4.3-inch screen and that all-important 4G LTE link. It’s far too early yet to write off the Droid range, and the Droid 3 would certainly make a safe choice for anyone who absolutely demands a physical keyboard. But Motorola should take care. One good idea and reliable build quality will only get you so far – today’s handsets need to be genuine all-rounders. Unless keyboards are your thing, this probably isn’t the Droid you’re looking for.

The myTouch 4G Slide may also have the best camera from HTC, which is an area they have traditionally been quite weak in compared to other smartphone manufacturers. I don’t think it can match what Nokia is doing with their cameras and the claim on the T-Mobile site that it is the “most advanced camera of any smartphone” may be a bit of a marketing phrase. Then again, I will have to give the 8 megapixel shooter a try and see for myself since I do own the Nokia N8.

Following the announcement that Nokia will be using Windows Phone 7 within a year, the E7 should be among its last Symbian-powered phones. Don’t get too emotional, now…

This handset combines all of Nokia’s current strengths and weaknesses. Made from anodised aluminium, it’s a well-constructed, chunky slider with a full QWERTY. Those elements have a reassuringly old-fashioned feel to them. Giving less of a warm, nostalgic glow are a 680MHz processor that’s noticeably slower than rivals, giving sluggish multi-touch, and an operating system that feels archaic next to Android, iOS or WP7. Symbian is not a pleasure to use, and the range of apps at the Ovi Store remains of lower quality and quantity than at Android Market or the Apple App Store.

The four-inch screen’s resolution is only 640×360, so movies lack the detail of the Incredible S or iPhone 4. Being AMOLED, it does produce excellent contrast areas and off-angle viewing, however. The E7 does have one killer feature and that is its eight-meg/720p camera. Stills are excellent, and you can tweak white balance, sharpness. ISO and contrast. There’s also an LED flash. The HD video capture is smooth with natural colours, too. I Iowever with its other deficiencies, including a battery that needs charging every night, the E7 is hard to recommend to anyone other than die-hard Nokia fans.

For ages the Xperia Play was referred to by everyone as the PlayStation handset. And with all the publicity neighboring Sony Ericsson’s newest Android phone it’s hard to envisage it living up to potential. Be short of of PlayStation branding in the name is telling, this handset is a association between Sony Ericsson and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), and so isn’t a pure-bred PlayStation product, but instead is ‘PlayStation Certified’. There’s no direct connection to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) then, and it won’t run games friendly with Sony’s handheld gaming gadget – which is probably all most people wanted or anticipated from a PlayStation handset. It will run games from the, openly retro, original PlayStation (PS1) – but only those that have been specifically converted for use on the Play. The other games in the current schedule are basically Android games, for instance an update of long-running driving series Asphalt, which has been modified to add support for its controls.

It’s those dedicated controls that really make the Xperia Play show up. They are positioned on a slide out portion, much like a keyboard on many handsets. The touchscreens on modern smartphones have no doubt inspired some novel innovative control mechanisms in mobile games; but more traditional comfort games will really benefit from the Play’s directional pad, four face buttons, two circular analogue touchpads and shoulder buttons. The Play’s design is indistinguishable to previous Xperia handsets, with its rounded and tapered ends and sleek plastic highlighted by chrome details. The top half of the Xperia consists of the screen and four buttons for Android’s ordinary functions: Back, Home, Menu and Search. The bottom half is about 50% thicker, and houses the Playstation controls over and above the phone’s ports – microUSB and headphone. This adds up to quite a substantial handset, and it feels heavy too, but not awkwardly so – its rounded shape helps it slip effortlessly into a pocket.

It still has some way to go to compete with the Torch’s keyboard, but it’s the best on an Android. The inclusion of the MotoBlur overlay also makes the Milestone 2 a more enticing proposition. In veterate social networkers will like the way it very fluidly aggregates different forms of communication from your contacts. MotoBlur also backs up your data to the cloud, which could prove extremely handy. In conjunction with Android 2.2, the Milestone 2 is generally fun to use.

Motorola has provided simple ways to navigate across the seven home screens and there are also some good widgets, including a strip of icons to easily turn N Wi-Fi, aeroplane mode, GPS and Bluetooth on or off from the home scre en. Web browsing is fast and video playback smooth. It’s also Flash-compatible so more of the internet is visible than on the iPhone 4. However, although the 1GHz processor keeps most things running at a good clip, the touchscreen can be annoyingly slow to respond. With the camera taking decent five-meg stills and very good 720p video, this is a strong handset. However the feeling remains that there’s nothing exceptional about it. You might be better off waiting for the Desire Z if you want Android 2.2 with a QWERTY keyboard…

The Torch rectifies that, sitting its most comfortable QWERTY yet under a large, responsive touchscreen. It’s chunky as a result, but still smart. The touchscreen/QWERTY combo feels natural, not cut-and shut. If you want to dial a number without opening the phone, a virtual keypad appears on screen. You can do the same with text messages but given how luxuriously spaced and satisfying the QWERTY is, you won’t find yourself doing so often. The Torch comes with the new BlackBerry OS 6. Based around swoppable screens – Frequent, Media, Downloads and a customisable Favourites one – it’s easy to navigate, with a tap on the info bar at thet op of the screen calling up emails, texts, Facebook updates and the latest from Twitter.

It still feels notably less slick than iOS or Android, and 624 MHz processor sometimes lags but the 3.2-inch touchscreen is quick and responsive and the accelerometer is better than most. The biggest improvement is the web browser, which looks lush, making the most of the greater screen real estate. There’s also a decent five-meg camera with flash, and the battery should last most users twodays between charges. As ever with BlackBerry, email is the best available, being fast, reliable and secure, while BlackBerry Messenger lets you send unlimited free messages to BlackBerry users. This is the best BlackBerry to date. It’s still not the complete smartphone package but for frequent messengers, nothing else comes close.

T-Mobile established late on Monday that it is going to shut down its Sidekick service on May 31 2011. Just then, the Microsoft-backed Danger servers will no longer be active and all Sidekick handsets will mislay the costly cloud-based services that define the phone. To lessen displeased patrons, T-Mobile will offer unnamed offers to Sidekick consumers to help them changeover to a latest phone. Web-based tools and in-store acquaintances will also be accessible to help Sidekick users back-up their contacts, emails, photos and more. There is no reveal of how many T-Mobile clienteles will be exaggerated by this conclusion. Many regulars were most likely obsessed away by the large date loss and outage suffered by Danger/Microsoft and its Sidekick brand back in 2009.

Fear not Sidekick fans! Although the Danger servers are being shut down, the Sidekick brand will prolong with Android. A Samsung-made Sidekick 4G was recently spotted in the wild with full Android attire and T-Mobile just launched a Sidekick 4G sign-up page. On the microsoft side of things, this spells the end of Danger which was bought for $500 million in back in 2008. These teams of Danger workers supposedly worked on the now defunct Kin handsets and have been or will be transitioned over to Windows handset. With Nokia’s switch to WP7, perchance the talents of this team can be used to incorporate Nokia’s Ovi cloud services with the Windows Phone platform.

The Spiro sports a fairly clear-cut, almost disarmingly humble frame with a sleek glossy front & a matte battery cover that makes for a pleasant contrast, besides preventing the mobile from slipping out of your palm during frantic use. At almost half the price of the Zylo, its Sony Ericsson stablemate, the Spiro makes much more sense, particularly if you hunt for a good music-playing mobile, since it comes with a 3.5mm headphone socket. It is extremely recommended that you endow in a good pair of earphones as the incorporated pair doesn’t do justice to the handset’s impressive playback quality. The phone also supports FM radio with RDS functionality.

As with many Sony Ericsson handsets, the Spiro sports a central, circular Navi key which is flanked by semi circle menu selection keys, which wrap around the call send/end keys. The describe allows for easy traversing of the menus, besides rendering easy control of the media player functions. The Spiro is powered by same Walkman 4.0 software that is featured in much higher end Sony Ericsson mobiles and delivers striking perfomance with PlayNow support. The mobile supports the TrackID function which lets you categorize a song just by listening it for a few seconds. Even though you need to rely on EDGE or GPRS connection to connect to Sony Ericsson’s data servers with your request. It also supports Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP for wirelessly streaming music. The Spiro sports a 2 MP camera at up to 2X digital zoom, which is fine for impromptu snaps to be send to friends via MMS. The mobile supports an impressive 2000 entries phonebook and recognizes microSD cards up to 16GB.

The vaguely unsettling TV spot was the last thing to leak before its official revelation and depicts an Android robot getting opposable thumbs grafted onto it’s arms with the tagline “Android is ready to play”. A Facebook page has also been launched advertising the device’s official launch date and Sony has been quick to label this one its “next gamechanger”.

Whereas it won’t blow any other high end smartphones away with it specs it hordes some rational hardware and most outstandingly seems to capture the spirit of Sony’s popular gaming gadget. The front of the handset looks noticeably Xperia-like but when the display is slide up it reveals a gamepad with a layout which will be memorable to gamers. Running Android 2.3 it will be powered by a 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM. The display is a 4″ capacitive touchscreen and there’s also a 5mp camera. One key feature will be Sony’s PlayStation Suite, a gaming platform for smartphones which will permit punters to play PlayStation games on the Xperia Play. It will be a first for smartphones and will ultimately find itself on other operating systems.

Samsung Galaxy 551 is an addition to the portfolio containing models like Galaxy 3 and Galaxy 5. Samsung Galaxy 551 is an effort by Samsung to capture the mobile market of mid-range smartphone users. Samsung Galaxy 551 is made entirely out of plastic which gives it a cool look. As there are no heavy materials used in its construction, the gadget is quite light weighing just 117 grams. The highlight of the phone is its full QWERTY keypad and we were impressed by the overall design of the handset. Samsung Galaxy 551 measures 111 x 55 x 15.2 mm and has glossy black finish. Samsung Galaxy 551 comes with a 3.2 inches TFT capacitive touch screen which is capable of displaying 16M colors of resolution measuring 240×400 pixels. Considering the price tag associated with the phone, the performance of the display and overall build of the phone is quite impressive.
